There is a counter on the right side of the Energy count display at the top of the game window. When I took note of the beginning count, it was cycling between 478 and 0. Once it reached 0 it restarted at 478 but nothing else seemed to change.

What is this counters use and should I wait for it to cycle a few times before doing something or should I try to hurry something along to be finished before the counter recycles?

That counter is for the next free engergy you get up to 50. Then the free energy it's full. You can have more then 50 if you klick the energy-icons that appear twice daily or the villagers or if you complete quests. Oh and than there is the cat that gives you energy once every day.

That's odd because I haven't seen an increase in energy nor have I seen any energy icons over buildings after the counter goes to zero ... will look closer next time.

Just checked. It has been many multiples of the 8 minutes for the timer, yet there is no free energy anywhere.

21 / 50 / 316 sec
The first number is the energie that you can use
the second is the maximum
the third is the time till you get 1 more energie
so the next will be
22 / 50 / 480 sec

Ah, that possibly explains it. My first two numbers are currently 214/37 ...

How do you get a higher maximum? How did I end up with a much higher amount I can use?

at the moment it is not possible to get more than 50 automaticaly. And there is no way to increase that amount.
You can have more than 50 if you exchange plants for energie ( villagers ) or the daily login bonus etc.

I guess it must go up by level as well. My numbers are currently 691/40.

On a side note, does it seem a bit quiet in here? I can almost hear the echos ...

if the counter reaches 0 you get +1 Energy. After that the counter goes back and starts again.
It's just a Energy counter.

Sorry, I must disagree. My display currently reads "1000 / 40 / <counter>". I watched the counter count down to 0 where it paused for a second, and then went back up to 478 to start all over again.

The display still reads "1000 / 40 / <counter>".

Could it be that the left hand number will only increase if it is lower than the right hand number?

thats because you have too much Energy. You have 1000 Energy but your maximum Energy is just 40. Thats why it does not increase anymore.
If one day you have 20/40 Energy, you will get one Energy once the counter is at 0.
