Having owls in the house is bad luck - that's according to my Aunt that really, really wanted me to get my owl pictures out of my house...she was serious about it
Lighting three cigarettes on a match is bad luck - which is a truism sort of - at least in war it was - if 3 soldiers took the time to light up it gave a sniper the time to get them in his sights.

Ok, knocking on wood - this practice to avoid bad luck has its root in pagan traditions, where various cultures believed helpful spirits resided inside certain trees. So if you touched that tree, you’d be asking the spirit for protection. Why it has to be natural wood.
breaking a wishbone - Legend has it that first-century Romans used to fight over dried wishbones — which they believed were good luck — and would accidentally break them, ushering in the idea that whoever has the largest bit of bone gets their wish.
Friday the 13th - I never understood the Friday the thirteenth fear, though enough people freak out over it that it is now a registered phobia.
(I just love googling everything and getting answers to why, haha)
