I've seen too many things like this before. I feel like this is one of those trick questions where the correct response is "Australia because it was still the largest even before it was discovered" (I mean, discovered by who exactly anyways? Mapmakers? Because I believe there were indigenous people inhabiting Australia when other people found it) But if it isn't a trick and we're not debating the whole "island vs continent" thing... I'm going to guess Greenland since it isn't too far off from Europe. So, I'd imagine they'd find it first and it's the biggest island I can think of. Sorry, I tend to over-think things a bit.
Ok, I don't really know what the criteria is for something being an island as opposed to a continent or something else, and if that statement just includes above water landmass or submerge land too, so I have no idea. That being said, I'll just go with Greenland because I can't think of any other biggish ones. (Unless it is like the person above me said and it is just a trick question. Then the answer's still Australia)
