Most has already been said so I will go with the newest thing which I believe will be super helpful anyway...
Use The Book of Goals for your garden upgrades, then you don't have to wait to see if you are close to having what you need to upgrade.

This event was helpful to me, I don't have my cloud garden open yet, it is good to hear that it would be worth the hard work to get that many lillies.

Okay, well, so much good advice has already been said...
Um, get large trees - nope, already mentioned
Get cloud berry tree - nope already mentioned
Get in an active clan - nope already mentioned
buy cloud garden quickly - nope already mentioned
build up low level brewery items early (cause when you need 100 on higher plants it takes so much time!) - nope already mentioned

Hmmm...wait I know, since this is advice for me, I would tell my just starting out self not to bother trying to start my own clan as it will be difficult and not as rewarding as joining the fun clan I am in now!

When u have a few mins 2play, plant blue bells n sell them at the market. DO NOT overcharge! Use the crystals 2clean out weeds so u can plant more plants - rinse, repeat

Use the forum for free stuff, participate in all the events and earn water lilies.

Would I be able to tell myself to use the wiki? Which came first the chicken or the egg?
When doing the tutorial, don't use the "More Quests" sign for 100 water lilies, use the individual new quest button for 1 water lily.

buy friend spaces ..... it's worth it because you then have more people to click on your plants AND you can click on more plants. it's a win win in the end.

I would tell my beginner self: when you visit your friends gardens, DON'T click on three different flowers leaving each flower unfinished! I didn't knew back then it's not nice thing to do (very embarrassed). Use your three clicks on ONE flower or finish the flower someone has already started!

Plant and gather more, worry about leveling up less.

Save Water Lillies until you're sure you know what you want to buy! Don't just buy things because you can. If in doubt about what to buy, ask your clan, they're far more experienced about what trees are more helpful.

Also, let your clan help save your tree! That's what they're there for. It'll save you energy and plants!
